Opening Reception Saturday October 21, 2023 - 5 to 7 p.m.

Through the centuries turtles in mythology have been associated with longevity, stability, patience, and wisdom among many other noble attributes. In general, most cultures hold turtles of all types in high esteem. 

Indigenous groups of North America have passed down creation myths about the world or cosmic turtle that carries the earth upon its back. Earlier humans were great observers of their environment, and it did not escape them that the back of the turtle has 13 scutes (scales) representing thirteen full moons of each year. The number of smaller scutes that circle the shell is 28 – the same as the 28-day moon cycle! No surprise that many early cultures regarded the turtle as a special member of the animal kingdom.

In addition to the many varieties of turtles, tortoises, and terrapins there are other avenues for artistic expression. Habitat and environmental issues that these fascinating creatures must overcome for their continued existence can be explored.

We plan to incorporate an educational element in the event to inform people about the life cycle, habitat and environmental challenges that turtles face. 

We are asking artists to create work that represents the theme “For the Love of Turtles”.

Any species, environment, or message the artist chooses that reflects the theme is encouraged.

We leave the creation up to the artist!
