Jim Miller Works

Jim Miller

An archaeologist by profession, Miller has explored Florida’s natural lands and waters for decades. He has combined his lifelong interests in art and natural history to create bird photographs that convey the unique emotions that natural Florida evokes. His work has been shown in multiple galleries and museums in nearly 20 exhibitions throughout the state.

His work has just been published by University Press of Florida in a new book, The Art of Birds, Grace and Motion in the Wild. Some 120 photographs depicting Florida birds in their amazing variety and beauty in unspoiled habitats are accompanied by quotes from early naturalists of Florida like Audubon, Bartram, and others. Through bird photography Miller explores the nature of art, beauty, and biology.

He received his undergraduate degree in anthropology at FSU, followed by masters degrees from Duke University and University of Pennsylvania. He was awarded the Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Pennsylvania in 1991. Jim served twenty years as State Archaeologist of Florida and has extensive experience in heritage management in Florida and the Caribbean.

For the last 18 years Jim has been a heritage planner in private practice, mostly consulting in Florida, New York, and The Bahamas. His current interests include bird photography and adapting very large historical data sets to GIS mapping.

He is represented by Signature Gallery in Tallahassee (signatureartgallery.com) and The Gallery at River’s Edge Art in Apalachicola, Florida (riversedgegallery.art). More information is available at jimmillerphotos.com.
